Sam Neill Dead at 78: Jurassic Park Star and Acting Legend Passes Away

Sam Neill, the actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park, has died at 78. His family confirmed he passed surrounded by loved ones, with the dignity that defined his life. The death was sudden and unexpected, made all the more striking by the fact that Neill had recently been declared cancer-free following a groundbreaking treatment for blood cancer diagnosed in 2023.

Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill built a career spanning more than five decades. He broke through in the 1977 New Zealand film Sleeping Dogs before earning international recognition in the 1990s, first alongside Sean Connery in The Hunt for Red October and then in the role that would follow him forever. Jurassic Park made him a household name, a status he revisited in Jurassic Park 3 and Jurassic World Dominion.

His range extended well beyond blockbusters. He delivered a quietly devastating performance in Jane Campion's The Piano, unsettled audiences in John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, and found new fans on television through The Tudors and Peaky Blinders.

When his blood cancer diagnosis went public in 2023, Neill faced it with characteristic wit, writing that he was not afraid to die but that it would annoy him. His recovery made the loss all the more sudden.

His former manager said he will be missed by film lovers, wine lovers, and anyone fortunate enough to have known him.
