Smoking, vaping, and drinking are common among the high school characters, and gang members are frequently shown using drugs. A grandmother regularly engages in drug and alcohol use alongside the teens, with substances a constant topic of conversation. A liquor store features in one scene.

Homeless men are bullied on the street. Gang presence is normalized throughout, with their grip on the neighborhood portrayed matter-of-factly. Violence is infrequent but unflinching when it occurs season one builds to two shootings, one fatal, though the outcome isn't revealed until much later.

Teen sexuality is a recurring theme. makeout scenes, boys commenting on girls' bodies, and frequent talk about sex and pursuit of it. Gang members harass girls.
